Director to join panel at East Midlands Chamber breakfast in November

Michael Smith Switchgear will join a panel of experts to discuss opportunities for women in STEM.

Director Emily Smith will be one of several manufacturers addressing the subject during an East Midlands Chamber breakfast in November.

She will attend as MD of AVW Fabrication and Operations and Finance Director at Michael Smith Switchgear.

In June, Emily was named one of The Manufacturer’s most influential people.

The breakfast has been organised by the Chamber’s Enterprising Women network and led by co-chairs Jean Mountain and Eileen Perry MBE DL.

Women make up only 28% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) - and men vastly outnumber women in most STEM fields in college.

The gender gaps are particularly high in some of the fastest-growing and highest-paid jobs of the future.

Emily said: “We will be discussing factors affecting the future of the STEM sector, such as gender stereotypes, male-dominated cultures, and the gap in role models within these sectors.

“We’ll be talking about how to promote participation, overcome barriers, and develop recruitment.”

Panellists include:

  • Aarti Raj, Strategic Account Director at Pick Everard
  • Joanne Bekis, Partner and Relationship Manager at Medilink Midlands
  • Ellizeh Bennett, STEM Ambassador at Chesterfield College
  • Sandra Wiggins, Managing Director and Co-founder of DPI UK

The breakfast is at Chesterfield College on 8 November 2023. Click here for more details.
