MSSL commits to further its carbon reduction by signing BEAMA’s 2050 Connected Climate Commitment.

Michael Smith Switchgear joins 31 organisations from across the UK's energy, transport and built environment supply chains in signing BEAMA’s relaunched 2050 Connected Climate Commitment.

Endorsed by CEF and The Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, the pledge aims to accelerate coordinated supply chain decarbonisation.

As a BEAMA Board member, Managing Director Sean Smith says the Commitment builds on MSSL’s sustainability work to date.

"Reducing our own emissions has become part of how we operate every day but meaningful progress on climate needs whole supply chains moving in the same direction,” he said.

“Being part of BEAMA and this commitment helps us play our part in that wider effort."

The commitment is designed to address the industry’s Scope 3 emissions.

Scope 3 emissions are the indirect emissions a business generates from the companies it buys from, the goods it ships, the travel its people make and the customers it sells to.

They usually account for more than 70% of the average business's total carbon footprint.

Addressing them at scale demands collaboration, not just individual action.

By signing, MSSL commits - alongside 31 peer organisations - to set science-based targets, embed sustainability into governance, adopt circular economy principles and actively collaborate across its value chain to reduce emissions.

This comes not long after MSSL received the King's Award for Enterprise and Environmental Product of the Year Award at the Data Centre World Awards.

Since 2018, MSSL has more than halved carbon emissions per employee while growing revenue by 66% and its workforce by 37%. Solar panels now generate 35% of required electricity on site, and landfill waste has been eliminated entirely.

Looking ahead, MSSL is acting on a recent water audit, exploring rainwater harvesting at its Leicester site and implementing further energy-saving measures.

BEAMA’s Climate Commitment was developed under its 2050 Connected platform - a not-for-profit, cross-industry service helping businesses collaborate towards Net Zero and a circular economy.

Members access practical toolkits on key sustainability topics and a policy update hub that keeps them ahead of regulatory change.

Together, these efforts aim to turn high-level climate ambitions into coordinated, day-to-day action across the UK’s energy and built environment supply chains.
