Emily Smith invited to attend King's Award reception
Michael Smith Switchgear attended Windsor Castle for a special event to recognise recipients of the King’s Award for Enterprise in 2025.
The invitation-only event brought together representatives of the 197 organisations recognised this year with the UK’s most prestigious business award.
Emily Smith, Operations and Finance Director, represented Leicester-based Michael Smith Switchgear for the occasion.
MSSL was one of only 27 organisations nationwide to receive the King’s Award for Sustainable Development in May. The company was one of just 16 East Midlands-based businesses to be honoured.
The award recognises MSSL’s work over recent years on dramatically reducing carbon emissions while simultaneously growing the business.
MSSL achieved Carbon Neutral status in 2022, and is currently seven years ahead of Make UK’s Net Zero carbon reduction roadmap.
It has doubled revenue and workforce over the last nine years, now employing 54 people.
MSSL has proactively enacted a string of sustainability measures which have reduced carbon emissions by 58% since 2018.
Emily joined MSSL in 2013, initiating MSSL’s sustainability work alongside Managing Director Sean Smith.
The company subsequently halved its carbon emissions over five years - while increasing revenue by 64% and expanding its workforce by 37%
Emily said: “The award and the visit to Windsor Castle are a testament to the dedication of our entire team, our suppliers, and our customers.
“I’m so proud of everyone who has been involved in our sustainability journey over the years.
“By working together we have proven that ambitious sustainability goals are achievable without compromising on growth or service.”
Michael Smith Switchgear celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025.
