Michael Smith Switchgear Director shows how to lead the way in sustainable manufacturing.
As a low-voltage switchgear manufacturer MSSL features in The Manufacturer to explain how small to mid-sized manufacturers can cut carbon emissions whilst growing in revenue.
In 2018, Operations and Finance Director Emily Bliss and Managing Director Sean Smith began building a structured sustainability strategy against the Make UK Net Zero Roadmap.
That roadmap challenges manufacturers to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 - a milestone MSSL reached in 2023, seven years early, while growing group revenue by more than 60%.
Progress has come through a series of staged interventions.
Emily said: “We didn’t start with large sustainability investments, but by measuring our emissions and fixing the basics.
“Once you understand your footprint and get some low‑cost wins, you can build towards future investments with more confidence.”
Product innovation has reduced copper in switchboards by around 25% without compromising performance, while on‑site measures such as installing 284 solar panels, switching to efficient lighting and investing in electric vehicles have lowered energy use and costs.
Since 2021, MSSL has sent no waste to landfill and achieved an 80%+ reduction in total waste tonnage over five years.
MSSL achieved certified Carbon Neutral status in 2022 following independently verified assessment of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and is now around seven years ahead of sector Net Zero milestones.
In 2025, this sustained progress was recognised with The King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development - one of only 27 UK businesses honoured in the category.
Emily said it's important to start by measuring your footprint, using recognised guidance and tackling low‑cost wins first can make Net Zero feel achievable.
“Once you understand your emissions, you can build towards future investments with confidence - strengthening resilience, reducing risk and creating a more attractive place to work,” she explains.
