MSSL director explains how MSSL has protected itself from volatility.

MSSL’s Finance and Operations Director Emily Smith has been featured by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), in an article exploring how manufacturers can protect themselves from economic volatility.

Published on ICAEW’s website, the piece “Four ways this SME manufacturer protected itself from volatility”, examines how MSSL has managed rising energy prices, supply chain disruption and inflation while continuing to invest in people, sustainability and growth.

The article highlights MSSL’s long‑term approach to sustainability as a core part of its financial strategy, rather than a separate environmental project.

It notes how measures such as improving energy efficiency, investing in rooftop solar generation and redesigning processes have helped limit exposure to fluctuations in energy and materials costs.

It also underlines the role of forward planning and strong supplier relationships in keeping projects moving for customers during periods of market disruption.

Emily’s contribution builds on her wider work with ICAEW, including her former role as Chair of its Manufacturing Community. She will also speak at ICAEW’s “Sustainability for Business 2026” event in London later this year.

In the article she shares how finance at MSSL works closely with operations, HR and engineering to understand risks early and act on them, from fixing energy costs where possible to building a more resilient, skilled workforce.

This joined-up approach mirrors the way MSSL has embedded sustainability across the business over the past decade, as set out in its ‘route to net zero’ case study with BEAMA.
