MSSL invests in STEM initiative helping to develop the skills and confidence the industry needs.
Michael Smith Switchgear is proud to support Hilton Formula 24 (HF24) - a Derbyshire STEM initiative giving students aged 11–16 hands-on engineering and motorsport experience.
This year, MSSL funded a battery trickle charger and new bodywork for HF24’s student-built cars.
These upgrades enabled young team members to achieve impressive results at competitions and build expertise in design, electronics, and coding, while gaining valuable experience of solving real engineering challenges.
This is MSSL's first year supporting the initiative’s value in providing inclusive hands-on learning in local classrooms and workshops.
The partnership continues to help students develop teamwork, technical ability, and problem-solving skills.
Operations and Finance Director Emily Smith said: “Supporting HF24 directly helps develop the skills and confidence the industry needs.
“MSSL is proud to back a project offering young people practical opportunities and inspiring future engineers.”
Across the UK, manufacturers continue to face a shortage of skilled professionals.
Programmes like HF24 introduce students to STEM at an early stage, preparing them to meet industry demands with practical experience.
Managing Director Sean Smith said: “The UK engineering sector needs more young people building skills for the future.
“Practical training, investment in apprenticeships, and collaboration with education partners will keep our industry moving forward.”
MSSL recognises that addressing the skills gap requires industry-wide effort and continued investment.
The apprenticeship programme at its carbon-neutral Leicester facility is one part of that commitment.
Eight apprentices currently train on-site at MSSL through Leicester College, working alongside experienced engineers and gaining practical skills in manufacturing, installation, and product innovation.
Through high-quality training and real responsibility, they play a vital role in shaping the future of UK engineering.
MSSL remains committed to supporting STEM education, practical skills development, and strong industry partnerships.
